NHS – Better Health campaign
The ‘Better Health’ campaign has been launched to help support the nation improve our health and wellbeing. The unusual circumstances we have all experienced this year have allowed many to get outside more and start walking or cycling as part of a more active lifestyle. However, for some the period of lockdown has led to increased weight and now as we start to move forward from lockdown this is a great opportunity to kickstart our health and continue any healthy new lifestyle habits or start afresh.
Focus on weight loss
The initial focus for the campaign will be on tackling obesity and supporting people in their weight loss journey. Just under two thirds (63%) of adults in the UK are overweight or living with obesity. (1) For many weight-gain is a gradual process particularly as we get older and weight gain can creep up on you over time.
Carrying extra weight causes pressure to build up around our vital organs making it hard for the body to fight diseases such as cancer, heart disease and now Covid-19. Particularly during this time, it is important to look after ourselves and reduce risks to our health by maintaining a healthy weight and active lifestyle. (1)
What is the guidance?
The advice is that adults should maintain a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) of between 18.5 and 25. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) also recommends that people who are Black, Asian or from Minority Ethnic Groups (BAME) should have a BMI below 23 and above 18.5 to avoid risks to their health. (2)
To calculate your BMI you will need to know your height and weight. You can then use an online calculator to work out your BMI, such as this one from the NHS

Our weight loss services:
There are two types of treatments available through our pharmacy: Orlistat and Saxenda. Our pharmacist will discuss these with you to establish if you are eligible for these treatments. They are only suitable for the following people: as they are designed for people aged 18-64 (for Orlistat) and 18-75 (for Saxenda), who:
Orlistat is taken in tablet form, over a 28 day period. It works by preventing some of the fat you eat being absorbed - just under a third. Orlistat should start to work within 1 to 2 days. It is important to also follow a weight-reducing diet and take regular exercise whilst taking Orlistat. Those that take Orlistat whilst following this guidance are more likely to lose more weight than those who do not take Orlistat whilst following a weight-reduced diet and regular exercise. (5)
Contact the pharmacy to BOOK an appointment to discuss if Orlistat could help you.
Saxenda is another treatment option we are able to offer and is administered by injection over a course of 28 days via pre-filled injections. Our pharmacist will give you advice and teach you how to administer them yourself.
Saxenda works in a different way to Orlistat in that it acts on the receptors in the brain that control your appetite. The result is that you feel full fuller and less hungry, which in turn may help you to eat less and therefore reduce your body weight. (7) If you think this treatment could be for you contact our pharmacy to BOOK an appointment to discuss if Saxenda could help you.
